TLD Internet Overhaul
Today we'll talk about Top Level Domains. So what is a Top Level Domain (TLD)? Basically,
it's whatever comes after the last "dot" in an internet address. For example, .com,
.net., .org, and .tv are all TLDs. Some interesting news that affects TLDs came
out last week.
According to the BBC:
The net's regulator, Icann, voted unanimously to relax the strict rules on so-called
"top-level" domain names, such as .com or .uk. <snip> domain names written
in Asian, Arabic or other scripts, was also approved.
So what does this mean? From what I can tell, it doesn't mean too much to us, the
everyday user. At least not at first. Basically, the addresses you type in to your
web browser will become shorter and simpler. So instead of going to www.cnn.com,
you might go to www.cnn.
But what about personal websites? Well, I can tell you for sure my website,
www.koransky.com, won't become a top level domain. At least not any time
soon. According to experts, the "fee will be in the low six figure dollar amounts".
Businesses must demonstrate a "business plan and technical capacity."
We appreciate any feedback you have on our shows thus far. Thanks to all our
listeners!
