Social Network Services
From Wikipedia,
a social network service uses software to build online social networks for communities
of people who share interests and activities or who are interested in exploring the
interests and activities of others.
There are a couple of nifty social networking sites worth checking out. Possibly the
most useful, no-frills site is LinkedIn.com,
whose primary purpose is to allow you
to network with people you have worked with in the past. You can search linked-in
for job listings, and if possible, use your network to get your "foot in the door".
Like they say, it isn't what you know, but who you know, and linked in makes it easy
keep track of all of your business contacts.
MySpace.com doesn't offer too much for businesses, unless you are a musician.
If you enjoy checking out new music like we do, you've probably heard many musicians
work on their myspace page. Users of MySpace can also create social networks,
create blogs and have access to all kinds of plugins they can add to their
myspace page. Unfortunately, most myspace pages look like they were designed
by some two year old, and it has become a target for spammers.
Enter Facebook. I like Facebook because of it's clean modular design. You can enter
information about your high school, college, and place of work, and Facebook will
let you know if any of your classmates or work cohorts have Facebook profiles.
You can also upload your address book and let Facebook go to work finding all
of your contacts' Facebook profiles. FaceBook apparently has a fairly strong developer base too,
so you can develop apps that plug into the FaceBook information architecture. These
apps appear on your profile page as nifty modules. Some of the modules can import
data from your other sites, such as your blog's RSS feed. All of my blog posts magically appear
on my facebook profile. If you are logged in, and
visit the front page of facebook, you get a nice home page where you can see what
all your friends have been doing on FaceBook (and off of facebook too... assuming
they have imported data from other sources).
Facebook also provides
privacy controls, so you have some kind of control over who and what has access to
the information you've given Facebook. The only major drawback to facebook is that
you
can't view another's profile until you have actually joined facebook.
There have been
discussions on the internet over who actually
owns the data you enter into services like facebook. Let's just say, if you read over
their user agreement, it ain't you. So while Facebook is happy to pull information
about you from other sources for display on your profile page, Facebook isn't so happy
to allow other services, like Google's Friend Connect
service, to have access to your
information. This isn't too surprising because the only real value FaceBook has is the
information you've entered into it.
Be sure to check out the
KHEN Facebook page.
We appreciate any feedback you have on our shows thus far. Thanks to all our
listeners!
