Tech Kernels from the Chicken Lips

Random News
I recently checked out a Wired.com
report on a new web site that possibly has the most unique business plan
I've ever heard. We all know the end of the world is coming, right?
Otherwise known
as The Rapture? Well... someday, anyway. Now lets say you are a Christian, and you
know, of course, you will be saved before Armageddon strikes... you'll be plucked from
your earthly existence and sent directly to heaven. But what about all the
unfortunate ones left behind? Well, now is your chance to send them a final
message. According to YouveBeenLeftBehind.com, if you've been left behind, you will receive blessed messages from those that have
entered heaven. It is their last chance to encourage you to accept Christ
so you too can enter heaven. But what about the technical folks running the
server? Aren't they Christians too? Sure they are, so the system detects
when they haven't logged in for 6 days and then sends the messages on their way. Of course, with hell on earth, you may be too busy to check your e-mail. And
what if the server is destroyed by the devil's minions? Further more, this
company that hides behind an anonymous domain registration service, and doesn't
list a single corporate officer or employee by name on its website. Sounds
a little fishy... and according to wired.com, they ignored e-mail inquiries.
Has the rapture already begun? Or is the server really registered by the Antichrist?
Inquiring minds what to know. You might check with
LandoverBaptist.org to see what the other "True Christians" think.
Speaking of the apocalypse, consider this recent news:
- After some HP computer users install Windows XP Service Pack 3, they find their computers spontaneously rebooting. Is it the devil at work?
- A Singapore firm, VueStar, claims it owns the patent on clickable or linked images.
VueStar has threatened to sue websites that use pictures or graphics
that link to another page, claiming it owns the patent. [Slashdot]
- The internet community helped solve a crime in Calgary in less than 48 hours.
An auto dealer in Calgary lended a car for a test drive, but the car never returned.
Aside from finding the location of the perpetrator, members of the community posted links to his Facebook page, used google maps to pinpoint his current location, and took video of the perp and posted that as well.
Big brother is watching, and big brother is you! [Slashdot,
NY Times]
- June 18th is the last day you can order a Dell with Windows XP on it. I'll
certainly have to purchase a new printer when I upgrade, and I use that term...
upgrade... loosely.
Maybe the apocalypse is closer than we think.
We appreciate any feedback you have on our shows thus far. Thanks to all our
listeners!
